Concerns of starting a website?

I have 4 Questions. should i worry about some one trying to copy my website style or idea? what could i do to protect my site. question 2, I have not started my site but it will be a directory. I plane on hiring a web designer. Is there a way i can practice designing my site with out literally making one. What information do you recommend starting my directory site
