CAVALRY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE RECOVERY?

when i plug my external hard drive in it shows that my files are not there and want me to format the hard drive but i dont want to do that or i will lose my data on the drive is there a way to recover my files and when i click on the drive icon it says the file directory is corrupted and unreadable but it was working fine before
